preservation service project on Midway Atoll for Elderhostel participants. I
focused the work on WWII remnants: stabilizing a 3" gun, stripping and
painting a 5" gun, stripping and painting steel sash windows, and cleaning
out and stabilizing the metal in three 5" gun batteries. We also documented
four reinforced-concrete buildings from 1905. Developed and presented
comprehensive lectures on concrete, steel, and historic preservation.

to create and manage the three-day event for 35 participants.

From inception to final accounting, the director and I created the UO Historic
Preservation program’s second summer field school, a six-week course located
at Port Orford on Oregon’s south coast. Besides hands-on wood working in the
reconstruction of a portion of an original 1898 fence, students assessed the
condition of the Cape Blanco Lighthouse (1870) for the BLM, designed a use-plan
for the Port Orford Life-Saving Station (1935), reconstructed windows for the
life-saving station, and designed a use-plan for the entire Cape Blanco
Headlands, along with sessions in historical archaeology, site interpretation,
and local architectural history. I was also the on-site coordinator during the
field school.

As a summer internship, I worked for the National Park Service out of their
regional office in Anchorage, Alaska. For five weeks, I assisted in field
reconnaissance survey in the 12 million acre, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
and Preserve. Surveyed such diverse structures as mines, water flumes, trapper
cabins, and dog houses. For the final seven weeks, I entered the data that we
had recovered from the field and programmed several conversion programs in dBASE
III+ to allow the data to be passed to Alaska’s State Historic Preservation
Office.

Led a team of seven in the production of measured, ink-on-mylar, HABS drawings
of the Pete French Round Barn (1884) in Harney County. The project was waylaid
by a lack of funds.

Evaluated the Watzek House (Yeon, 1935) in Portland as part of a team of four
students. The report became an integral factor in the house’s donation to the
University of Oregon.

Co-led a class of 20 in a condition assessment of the Silver Falls Lodge
(1939-40) in Silver Falls State Park near Salem. I also co-edited the final

Worked on the evaluation team proposing treatments for a stretch of the Historic
Columbia River Highway (1913-16) between Tanner Creek and Eagle Creek. This was
a group project for the Oregon Department of Transportation as part of a
Landscape Preservation class. Several of the proposals made by the team have
since been realized.

Shelter at Eagle Creek in the Columbia River Gorge for the US Forest Service.

Attended a six-week preservation field school in England through the University
of Maryland at College Park. Sorted through the archival matter at the
Northallerton County Records Office of Kiplin Hall, North Yorkshire, to uncover
construction dates of various additions to the Jacobean manor house (1625) and
grounds.

FOHA
Current Treasurer (2018) of the Friends of Historic Albany. I led the re-establishment of FOHA after a 19-year absence in Albany. Originally founded in 1981 to watch over Albany’s historic districts, FOHA’s need became apparent when a threat arose to demolish three historic contributing properties within the Monteith Historic District. We are currently leading a LUBA appeal of City Council’s decision to allow the demolition to proceed.
