Contracted with the Oceanic Society of San Francisco to develop and run a preservation service project on Midway Atoll for Elderhostel participants. I focused the work on WWII remnants: stabilizing a 3" gun, stripping and painting a 5" gun, stripping and painting steel sash windows, and cleaning out and stabilizing the metal in three 5" gun batteries. We also documented four reinforced-concrete buildings from 1905. Developed and presented comprehensive lectures on concrete, steel, and historic preservation.  Article on the work at CRM Archive.

The Your Town Workshop is a National Trust event sponsored through a grant provided by the National Endowment of the Arts. The Historic Preservation League of Oregon and the University of Oregon teamed up to win a grant for a workshop that teaches graphical methods of evaluation to small city managers. My role was to create and manage the three-day event for 35 participants.

Converted all of the historic inventories in Corvallis to an electronic format. The product is tied to the web site Corvallis Historic Property Inventory allowing the public electronic access to the history of properties in Corvallis.

Partnered on a application for Oregon’s Special Assessment Program for the Baldwin Market (c.1920) in Eugene. Also partnered on a reapplication for Special Assessment for the Red Barn (c.1914) in Eugene. Both properties were accepted by the State Historic Preservation Office.

Partnered on a reconnaissance survey of 300 structures in Eugene’s Westside neighborhood. We provided Eugene with the first electronic database directly transferrable to their mainframe computer.

Oct 1995 - Aug 1996     Preservation Field School Coordinator    Port Orford, OR
From inception to final accounting, the director and I created the UO Historic Preservation program’s second summer field school, a six-week course located at Port Orford on Oregon’s south coast. Besides hands-on wood working in the reconstruction of a portion of an original 1898 fence, students assessed the condition of the Cape Blanco Lighthouse (1870) for the BLM, designed a use-plan for the Port Orford Life-Saving Station (1935), reconstructed windows for the life-saving station, and designed a use-plan for the entire Cape Blanco Headlands, along with sessions in historical archaeology, site interpretation, and local architectural history. I was also the on-site coordinator during the field school.

Partnered on a reconnaissance survey of 322 structures followed by an intensive survey of 75 buildings in two Corvallis neighborhoods. We provided Corvallis with the first all-electronic survey performed in the state.

As GTF for the three-term Historic Preservation Issues course, I was responsible for planning the class and procuring speakers. I also set up a panel presentation and discussion of house museums in Oregon.

Supervised the production of the Your Town manual, gathered supplies for the workshop, set up the location before participants arrived, and aided the coordinator at the workshop. I was involved in the workshop from the day the grant application was prepared until the final accounting was processed.

Partnered on an intensive survey of Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood. Field work and research led to statements of significance for approximately 100 properties in the survey area.

From inception to final accounting, the director and I created the UO Historic Preservation program’s first summer field school, a four-week course located at the Malheur Field Station, 30 miles south of Burns, Oregon. Its goal was to teach hands-on masonry and wood restoration skills to students and to provide classroom instruction in the history of the area. The school also had a one-week historic archaeology component. I was also the on-site coordinator during the field school.

As a summer internship, I worked for the National Park Service out of their regional office in Anchorage, Alaska. For five weeks, I assisted in field reconnaissance survey in the 12 million acre, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Surveyed such diverse structures as mines, water flumes, trapper cabins, and dog houses. For the final seven weeks, I entered the data that we had recovered from the field and programmed several conversion programs in dBASE III+ to allow the data to be passed to Alaska’s State Historic Preservation Office.

Kemron Environmental Services, Inc. is a medium-sized, multi-branch company specializing in environmental surveys and the subsequent data analysis. I designed and coded ARCHDATA, a 6000-line dBASE IV program for recording artifacts retrieved from archaeological sites; produced detailed proposals for various archaeology projects; assisted in graphics, editing, and producing several Cultural Resource Reports for the SHPOs of Pennsylvania and Ohio; maintained the Novell network; and participated in several field excavations in Pennsylvania.

Co-directed a class in recording the systems of the Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson House (1888) as a step towards a Historic Structures Report on the house. No compensation.

Mar 1995 - June 1995
Led a team of seven in the production of measured, ink-on-mylar, HABS drawings of the Pete French Round Barn (1884) in Harney County. The project was waylaid by a lack of funds.

May 1995
Evaluated the Watzek House (Yeon, 1935) in Portland as part of a team of four students. The report became an integral factor in the house’s donation to the University of Oregon.

Co-led a class of 20 in a condition assessment of the Silver Falls Lodge (1939-40) in Silver Falls State Park near Salem. I also co-edited the final report.

Apr 1994 - May 1994
Assisted in surveying approximately 80 buildings in Ione, Oregon, at the reconnaissance level.

Jan 1994 - Mar 1994
Worked on the evaluation team proposing treatments for a stretch of the Historic Columbia River Highway (1913-16) between Tanner Creek and Eagle Creek. This was a group project for the Oregon Department of Transportation as part of a Landscape Preservation class. Several of the proposals made by the team have since been realized.

Worked as part of a team to produce measured, ink-on-mylar drawings of a Kitchen Shelter at Eagle Creek in the Columbia River Gorge for the US Forest Service.

Attended a six-week preservation field school in England through the University of Maryland at College Park. Sorted through the archival matter at the Northallerton County Records Office of Kiplin Hall, North Yorkshire, to uncover construction dates of various additions to the Jacobean manor house (1625) and grounds.

Commissioner on the Albany Landmarks Advisory Commission (LAC) since January 2005.

U.S. Life-Saving Service Heritage Association 
Board member (2002-present) of the United States Life-Saving Service Heritage Association, a national organization dedicated to the preservation, promotion and interpretation of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, the forerunner of the U.S. Coast Guard.  

Society of Architectural Historians - Marion Dean Ross Chapter
Newsletter editor (2007-present) and Membership Coordinator (2009-present) for the Society of Architectural Historians, Marion Dean Ross Chapter, which covers the Pacific Northwest. I attended the 2003 SAHMDR Conference in Victoria, British Columbia; the 2006 conference in Moscow, Idaho; presented at the 2007 conference in Corvallis, Oregon; and attended the 2008 conference in Tacoma and the 2009 conference in Portland.
